Check out these really cool fun facts about flowers! I didn't know any of these!

1.   Roses are related to apples, raspberries, cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines, pears and almonds.
2.     Tulip bulbs were more valuable than gold in Holland in the 1600s.
3.     Ancient civilizations burned aster leaves to ward off evil spirits.
4.     Tulip bulbs can be substituted for onions in a recipe.
5.     Chrysanthemums are associated with funerals in Malta and are considered unlucky.
6.     The very expensive spice, saffron, comes from a type of crocus flower.
7.     The largest flower in the world is the titan arums, which produce flowers 10 feet high and 3 feet wide. The flowers smell of decaying flesh and are also known as corpse flowers.
8.     Almost 60 percent of fresh-cut flowers grown in the U.S. come from California.
9.     Hundreds of years ago, when Vikings invaded Scotland, they were slowed by patches of wild thistle, allowing the Scots time to escape. Because of this, the wild thistle was named Scotland’s national flower.
10. The lotus was considered a sacred flower by ancient Egyptians and was used in burial rituals. This flower blooms in rivers and damp wetlands, but may lie dormant for years during times of drought, only to rise again with the return of water. Egyptians viewed it as a symbol of resurrection and eternal life.
11. Scientists discovered the world’s oldest flower in 2002, in northeast China. The flower, named Archaefructus sinensis bloomed around 125 million years ago and resembles a water lily.
12. The juice from bluebell flowers was used historically to make glue.
13. Foxglove is an old English name, derived from the belief that foxes slipped their feet into the leaves of the plant to sneak up on prey.
14. Dandelions might seem like weeds, but the flowers and leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and potassium. One cup of dandelion greens provides 7,000-13,000 I.U. of vitamin A.
15. The flower buds of the marsh marigold are pickled as a substitute for capers.
16. Sunflowers move throughout the day in response to the movement of the sun from east to west.
17. Moon flowers bloom only at night, closing during the day.
18. Flowering nicotiana is related to tobacco, from which cigarettes are made.
19. Gas plants produce a clear gas on humid, warm nights. This gas is said to be ignitable with a lit match.
20. When Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, they subsisted on the roots of the Sego Lily Plant. This plant is the state flower of Utah.
21. The cornstarch-like powder known as arrowroot is derived from the plant, Marantha arundinacea, and is native to India. It was used by indigenous people to draw out the toxins from a poisoned arrow wound. Today, it is used to thicken pies and jellies.
22. Angelica was used in Europe for hundreds of years as a cure for everything from the bubonic plague to indigestion. It was thought to ward off evil spirits.
23. Blue cohosh, also known as squaw root or papoose root, was used by Native American women to ensure an easy labor and childbirth.
24. During the Middle Ages, lady’s mantle was thought to have magic healing properties.
25. When Achilles was born, his mother dipped him head first in a bath of yarrow tea, believing it had protective qualities. Yarrow is still known for healing and was used during World War I to heal soldiers’ wounds.

Striking Buffets the Fun Way

Michelle Virtue, from BYU's Campus Floral, shares some tips for creating a beautiful buffet.
1. Select a style or theme and run with it! Your party or meal might revolve around a holiday, color palette, the guest of honor, OR any of your favorites. Stay focused and start collecting.

2. Height is key. Either go tall and showy with your buffet or low and conservative, but be consistent and committed. Spread your color and theme throughout the display.

3. Consider your menu. Be sure your buffet will accommodate the type of food you are serving and the space you need to serve comfortably.

4. Be mindful of your guests. Keep allergies, heights and preferences of guests a priority.

5. Use the unexpected! Borrow, brainstorm and pull out your collection of spray paint. This is your chance to show off your

Here at Campus Craft, we have great things to say about our friend the Kalanchoe.
These plants have long-lasting blooms and don't like too much sun or too much water, making them perfect, easy-care indoor plants. Kalanchoe plants are succulent, meaning their fleshy leaves store water, so much like a cactus, they don’t like to be over-watered.To avoid this, ensure excellent drainage by emptying excess water from the plant tray or saucer. We also recommend placing pebbles or charcoal at the bottom of your Kalonchoe pot to avoid it sitting in water. For the plant to bloom well, clean all the accumulated dead stems, leaves and stalks from under the plants. This will keep it looking fresh and clean. Regular pruning helps the plant in healthy flowering.

Well, fall is here! I was driving through Provo Canyon this weekend and this is what I saw. It was so beautiful, I even had to stop on the side of the road and enjoy the view. It made my day, actually, I am convinced it made my week.

I bought the new Mindy Gledhill CD a few weeks ago and we've been listening to it in the store. It's one of my current favorites--light, hopeful, and just FUN. You'll never guess who stopped in the store on Tuesday. Yes, Miss Mindy herself. It made my week!!! She is as charming and lovely in person as she appears on stage--just like her music. We hope she comes again! If she does, I'm going to ask her to sing a few bars of California for us in person. I LOVE that song. Hope she won't mind.

Today we were SO hungry. You know, the point to where you feel like your big guts are eating your little guts. We call our friends at SLAB Pizza (and we really feel like they're our friends), race down the hill, and enjoy a bit of pie--okay, it's a lot more than a bit. Today, H & T were in the mood for Hawaiian Paradise and I can't resist the fennel, sausage & chevre. So, if your travels ever take you south of campus, pay them a visit. This good looking plant is known as the Ficus Benjamina and is one of our most popular plants that we sell. To keep this plant looking its best, we recommend that you select a site with bright, filtered light. Avoid an area that gets direct sunlight all day. A good tip is to also avoid overwatering your ficus. When watering, always feel the surface of the soil with your finger tip. If it feels dry to the touch one inch below the surface, it is time to water. If the soil still feels moist, wait to water it for a day or two. And as always, be sure to have a saucer or tray for the water to drain to avoid overwatering.

And one more tip, Ficus plants really like to stay in one place with a consistency in the environment. We recommend a consistent temperature with predictable watering and sunlight.

What's Going on Around Provo

Just wanted to let everyone know what is happening over the weekend. Yesterday I was able to visit the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall. This is an exact replica of the one in Washington, D.C. but it is exactly half the size. It travels around the United States stopping in various cities. Until Monday, it is at the Spanish Fork Cemetery and it really is such a treat to see. While I was there, there were Vietnam Veterans and families of lost loved ones visiting and the atmosphere was so special. We are so lucky to have it near by and I wouldn't want you to miss it. It is definitely worth your time.

Back to School & Lots to Say About IT

It's the first day of school here at The BY. It's SO exciting. You can smell a hint of new notebooks in the air. Do students still use notebooks? Maybe the whiff of paper is coming from our neighbors at Cougar Creations. At any rate, we're excited to have students back for some serious fall fun. Lots on the docket today.

First things first, let's all wish Marisa P.H. a happy birthday! Even though Marisa has graduated and moved on to more temperate climates, we're still eating cupcakes today.
Secondly, might I mention that we're participating in the Move-In Tent Sale with the BKST in the area east of the Harold B.L. Library? Oh, the plant selection is dEEvine.

Finally, a reminder that THE Cougs have a little thing called the first football game of the 2010 season THIS Saturday at Lavell Edwards Stadium. BE there to support, CCF friends. If you need something to get you in the mood, I'm happy to sing the fight song for you from start to finish. GO COUGARS!!!

As I was looking for some ideas for peach colored bridal bouquets, I came across this beautiful bouquet.......Peach roses framed in soft peach feathers. It was so elegant, but also unique. I've seen a lot of peacock and black feathers in bouquets as of late, but this gorgeous peach was new to me......love it!

It's free and all you need to bring is a blanket and some treats to snack on. We recommend a yummy flavored sucker from CCF! We just got a new shipment in, and can I just say that cookies & cream and caramel apple are an option? Yes, a must have with the movie. Can't think of a better way to spend an evening. Spathiphyllum

This plant is the Spathiphyllum, or otherwise known (an easier to pronounce!) as the Peace Lily. Spath's are an in-door plant commonly used in homes, offices, and shopping malls due to the fact that they grow so well and that they can adapt to many different conditions. The plant has spoon-shaped leaves in a wide variety of sizes that can be green or variegated. Spath's do their best in low-light situations. If you can comfortably sit and read in the spot, the plant will do all right. Winter sun is fine, but avoid direct afternoon sun in the summertime. As far as watering goes, keep the soil evenly moist all year round. Do not allow it to stand with water in the saucer for more than an hour or two.

And here's a Spath care-giving tip: when grooming this plant, give them an occasional shower to remove any accumulated dust from the foliage. Also, as flowers fade, clip off the stem as low as you can reach.

Overall, we find the Peace Lily to be a great addition to our CCF plant home. We sell this plant in these three sizes:

Pothos

If you're looking for a houseplant for your home or office, let us introduce you to the Pothos. This is one of our best-selling green plants. Its popularity stems from its resilience and overall easy care. It seems to handle artificial light very well and minimal watering (1-2 times per week should do it). It is often known for its trailing growth pattern, but we recommend regular pruning to ensure full and lush foliage. A potted pothos can be purchased from our plant area for as little as $1.99. If you're looking for something a bit more substantial, our 6" foliage plants are only $12.99.

Our good friends at Wikipedia describe it this way:

It is a popular houseplant with numerous cultivars selected for leaves with white, yellow, or light green variegation. It is often used in decorative displays in shopping centers, offices, and other public locations largely because it is a very hardy plant that requires little care and is also attractively leafy. It is also efficient at removing indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene^[1]^[2] A study found that this effect became less the higher the molecular weight of the polluting substance.^[3]

As a houseplant it can reach a height of two meters or more, given suitable support. For best results it requires medium indirect light; bright light is tolerated, but lengthy spells of direct sun will scorch the leaves. The plant prefers a temperature of between 17 to 30 °C (63 to 86 °F). Generally it only needs water when the soil begins to feel dry to the touch. For best results a liquid fertilizer can be added in spring, and they should be repotted every couple of years. However, this is a robust plant that can stand a very high degree of abuse. It will grow hydroponically quite readily.

The plant is listed as "toxic to cats, toxic to dogs" by the ASPCA, because of the presence of insoluble calcium oxalates. Care should be taken to ensure the plant is not consumed by house pets or children. Symptoms may include oral irritation, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.^[4]

Wilton Cake Decorating Classes

They do not have to be taken consecutively
The cost for the 4-week instruction is $35.00. That does not include supplies. The kits are approximately $39.99 and students are asked to bring their own cakes and frosting.
In order for a student to be officially enrolled in the course, they MUST pay in advance. Call 801-422-2840 and we can sign you up lickety-split!
The class size is limited to 15 students with a 6 student minimum.
Students need to bring supplies the first week of each course. The course descriptions and supply lists are also posted on the sidebar of this VERY blog.

Back From L.A.

Just back from the streets of Los Angeles. Glad to be home in my own bed--dreaming of the fun things that will be arriving as a result of lots of walking and hunting. Some men go out into the wilderness for days searching for wild game. I go out into the urban wilderness for days searching for wildly insane cuteness. The only difference is that I stayed at the Sheraton and traded in my orange vest for a knit cardigan. So, here's just a taste of what we have coming.

You're going to LOVE the vintage goodness of Cody Foster and Co. Lots of amazing ornaments. Oh, they are BEE-utiful. In fact, a Mr. Cody Foster even wrote my order.The hunt also brought about some Love & Toast. Did someone say roller-ball perfumes? Hand cream? Lip balm? Well, they're on their way, darlings! Who doesn't want to smell like a Dew Blossom? Seriously.

These fun new lines should be arriving soon--along with a slew of others. It was a good hunting trip, to say the least.
